The sun and the sky
When the crowds of tourists leave Provence the sunshine that inspired VanGogh and Cezanne is still here. Of course you can't go swimming in November, but the trees are full of warm colors and the sky is crystal clear. Even in February the air is often warm enough to have lunch outside on the café terraces.
Painters have always been fond of the light in autumn and in winter. It has a particular purity to it: something you don't get when the sun's closer to the earth. Writers have always found words and ideas here. Camus, Lawrence Durrell, Graham Greene - just to name a few.
Provence in autumn and winter has a liberating effect. You can forget the distractions of home and daily routine. In short, it's a place where people often find peace and concentration. And inspiration.
Village of Lourmarin
Few clouds, little rain
Of course the south of France is not in the tropics but it certainly isn't cool like Scotland or Paris or Florence or New York. And it doesn't rain often. Most days there are no clouds. On average it rains 21 or 22 days per year. Less than two days a month. And when it does rain it never lasts more than an hour or so.
